Ras-I’s ‘Heart Of Love’ Brings Roots and Modern Vibes Together

Ras-I balances live reggae musicianship with dancehall, pop, trap and Afrobeats touches across his 13-track album, ‘Heart Of Love.’ The result is a warm, message-driven set that respects roots tradition without getting stuck in it.

Ras-I’s ‘Heart Of Love’ finds the Jamaican artist working from a clear roots-reggae foundation while leaving room for newer rhythmic ideas. Released through Ineffable Records and Koastal Kings, the 13-track album moves between uplifting roots selections, slow-burning love songs and more energetic cuts built for movement. The project follows a rise that has included appearances at major Jamaican festivals and the 2024 Caribbean Music Awards’ Best New Reggae Artist prize, according to the original album report. More importantly, it presents Ras-I as an artist intent on shaping his own sound rather than simply reviving an older one.

Keneil “Drumz” Delisser leads the production, with the arrangements giving live instrumentation enough space to breathe. Ras-I’s role reaches beyond the microphone: the report highlights his work as a writer, producer and player of guitar, keyboard and percussion. Kristoff Morris contributes drums, while Kenroy Mullings adds guitar, and Shanice Phillips leads the background choir. Those details matter to the album’s feel. Even when the songs lean toward polished contemporary reggae, the playing keeps them grounded in musicianship instead of reducing the project to a collection of interchangeable digital riddims.

The album’s strongest quality is its range. ‘Essence’ and ‘Champion’ carry messages of growth, self-belief and forward motion, while ‘Forever & Always’ and ‘Reggae Mountain’ sit closer to traditional roots territory. ‘Oya,’ featuring Govana, shifts into a lively, almost ska-like groove, and ‘Home,’ with Khalia, takes a calmer route. Elsewhere, pop, trap, Afrobeats and dancehall influences enter the mix without overwhelming the reggae core. Ras-I is not treating those styles as decoration; he uses them to widen the album’s movement and its potential audience.

The guest appearances help underline that balance. Kabaka Pyramid brings a contemporary edge to the project, while Govana’s presence on ‘Oya’ adds a sharper dancehall connection. Khalia’s contribution to ‘Home’ supports one of the album’s gentler moods. These collaborations do not pull ‘Heart Of Love’ away from its central identity. Instead, they give Ras-I different spaces in which to test the same concerns: love, resilience, confidence and the role of music in keeping people connected. The album’s modern touches work best when they serve those themes rather than compete with them.

Ras-I is at his most exposed on ‘Hear My Call,’ a song the report identifies as an intimate look into his inner world and vocal range. ‘Play On’ and ‘Reggae Mountain’ turn perseverance and reggae culture into rallying points, carrying the kind of uplift that has long been central to roots music. The closing ‘Love Some More’ brings the set down gently, using a warm, mellow mood to gather its emotional threads. It is a fitting finish for an album that speaks about unity without losing its personal center.

‘Heart Of Love’ ultimately works because it does not present roots reggae and modern production as opposing choices. Ras-I keeps the message direct, builds around live players and lets each outside influence have a defined role. The album can move from a reflective ballad to a danceable groove, but its emotional temperature remains steady: generous, hopeful and grounded. For listeners looking for reggae with contemporary reach, the project offers substance alongside polish. It sounds like an artist still developing, but already clear about the values he wants his music to carry.
